The authors develop a small number of examples that typify validation requirements and demonstrate how they can be met with ShEx and SHACL. The book is not intended to be a formal specification of the languages, for which the interested reader can consult the corresponding reference documents, but rather, it is meant to serve as an introduction to the technologies with some background about the rationale of their design and some points of comparison.

Visualizing RDF Graphs https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/visualizing-rdf-graphs/ Mon, 09 Jan 2017 06:45:30 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/visualizing-rdf-graphs/ In this video tutorial, the presenter uses Omnigraffle to sketch out the RDF data model, explaining each component as he does so. The walk-through is not purely conceptual; the presenter also uses data from an RDF/XML file to fill in the URIs corresponding to the nodes and edges of his graph. Finally, a second RDF visualization tool, RDF Gravity, is briefly demonstrated.

How Does a Graph Database Differ From a Relational Database? https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/how-does-a-graph-database-differ-from-a-relational-database/ Mon, 09 Jan 2017 06:45:30 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/how-does-a-graph-database-differ-from-a-relational-database/ This video describes the difference between a graph database model (such as RDF) and the relational database model (RDBMS). Focuses on the increased efficiency of discovery complex relationships when edges and nodes are used instead of tables and keys.

Linked Data Basics for Techies https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-basics-for-techies/ Thu, 29 Dec 2016 06:44:04 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-basics-for-techies/ This guide is intended to be a crash course for a techie/programmer who needs to learn the basics ASAP. It is not intended as an introduction for managers or policy makers. It is primarily aimed at people who are tasked with creating RDF and need information quickly. It is also useful to people who want to work with RDF data.

Expressing Dublin Core Metadata Using RDF https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/expressing-dublin-core-metadata-using-rdf/ Wed, 21 Dec 2016 06:43:13 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/expressing-dublin-core-metadata-using-rdf/ This document provides recommendations for expressing Dublin Core metadata using RDF, the Resource Description Framework. It describes how the features of the DCMI Abstract Model are represented using the RDF data model. It does not rely on any specific RDF syntax, though examples using RDF/XML are provided.

Scaling Up https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/scaling-up/ Sun, 23 Oct 2016 05:39:26 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/scaling-up/ This module addresses the main issues of Linked Data and scalability. In particular, it provides details on approaches and technologies for clustering, distributing, sharing, and caching data. Furthermore, it addresses the means for publishing data and the relationship between Big Data and Linked Data, exploring how some of the solutions can be transferred in the context of Linked Data.

A survey of RDF storage approaches https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/a-survey-of-rdf-storage-approaches/ Fri, 02 Sep 2016 05:05:14 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/a-survey-of-rdf-storage-approaches/ This paper gives an overview of the features of techniques for storing RDF data from the perspective of addressing the need to efficiently store and retrieve RDF data as the number and scale of Semantic Web in real-word applications in use increase. As datasets grow larger and more datasets are linked together, scalability becomes more important. Efficient data storage and query processing that can scale to large amounts of possibly schema-less data has become an important research topic.

Storing and Indexing Massive RDF Data Sets https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/storing-and-indexing-massive-rdf-data-sets/ Fri, 02 Sep 2016 05:05:14 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/storing-and-indexing-massive-rdf-data-sets/ This paper presents a general survey of the current state of the art in RDF storage and indexing. It identifies three different perspectives on RDF, each of which has drawn from ideas and results in three distinct research communities to propose solutions for managing RDF data: relational databases (for the relational perspective); information retrieval (for the entity perspective); and graph theory and graph databases (for the graph-based perspective).

Markup Languages and Document Processing: Semantic Web and RDF Lecture https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/markup-languages-and-document-processing-semantic-web-and-rdf-lecture/ Tue, 10 Nov 2015 02:57:31 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/markup-languages-and-document-processing-lecture-9/ This lesson plan was used for the course "Markup Languages and Document Processing", part of the Master in Informatics and Computing Engineering program at Porto University. Contains Bibliography and Materials (most with links) used to achieve the following learning goals: Enumerate the goals of the Semantic Web; Identify semantic web technologies and characterize their scope;
Describe the RDF model as a graph with statements about resources, each with a subject, a predicate and an object; Relate RDF graphs with their XML serialized versions.
