Ontologies and the Semantic Web https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontologies-and-the-semantic-web-2/ Fri, 30 Dec 2016 06:44:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontologies-and-the-semantic-web-2/ A video lecture introducing RDF Schema and OWL, with visible slides throughout. The concepts behind ontologies are also discussed in a general, schema-agnostic manner. Places these technologies within the larger context of the Semantic Web.

XSD (XML Schema Definition) https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/xsd-xml-schema-definition-2/ Thu, 24 Nov 2016 05:51:18 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/xsd-xml-schema-definition-2/ This slide presentation explains that the purpose of an XML Schema is to define the legal building blocks of an XML document, just like a Document Type Definition (DTD). Explains the difference between the simple and complex element types. Also covers attributes, restrictions, enumeration, and indicators.

Coloring RDF Triples to Capture Provenance https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/coloring-rdf-triples-to-capture-provenance/ Wed, 23 Nov 2016 05:50:22 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/coloring-rdf-triples-to-capture-provenance/ Recording provenance information of RDF triples aggregated from different heterogeneous sources is crucial in order to effectively support trust mechanisms, digital rights and privacy policies. Managing provenance becomes even more important when we consider not only explicitly stated but also implicit triples (discovered through RDF Schema inference rules) in conjunction with declarative languages for querying and updating RDF graphs. This paper proposes a method which relies on colored RDF triples represented as quadruples to capture and manipulate explicit provenance information.

On Explicit Provenance Management in RDF/S Graphs https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/on-explicit-provenance-management-in-rdfs-graphs/ Sun, 17 Jan 2016 13:56:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/on-explicit-provenance-management-in-rdfs-graphs/ The notion of RDF Named Graphs has been proposed in order to assign provenance information to data described using RDF triples. This paper argues that named graphs alone cannot capture provenance information in the presence of RDF Schema reasoning and updates. In order to address this problem, the authors introduce the notion of RDF/S Graphsets, in which a graphset is associated with a set of RDF named graphs and contain the triples that are jointly owned by the named graphs that constitute the graphset. They formalize the notions of RDF named graphs and RDF/S graphsets and propose query and update languages that can be used to handle provenance information for RDF/S graphs taking into account RDF Schema semantics.

XML and JSON Data Modeling Best Practices https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/xml-and-json-data-modeling-best-practices/ Sat, 16 Jan 2016 13:43:28 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/xml-and-json-data-modeling-best-practices/ This brief tutorial demonstrates some best practices to use when modeling data in XML and/or JSON. It covers document sizing and granularity, keeping a data model simple and understandable, and applying envelope patterns. This tutorial is geared for developers using Mark Logic 7 or 8.

This lecture introduces RDF Schema and discusses its benefits as well as its constraints and limitations. This includes inference and semantics, entailments, comparisons to OWL (such as the handling of disjointedness), and serializing RDF in XML.
