Knows the origins of the World Wide Web (1989) as a non-linear interactive system, or hypermedia, built on the Internet. – Linked Data for Professional Education https://ld4pe.dublincore.org Learning resources tagged by competency Thu, 19 Nov 2020 14:45:03 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.16 Swagger, the API Economy, REST, Linked Data, and a Semantic Web https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/swagger-the-api-economy-rest-linked-data-and-a-semantic-web/ Sat, 19 Aug 2017 08:28:00 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/swagger-the-api-economy-rest-linked-data-and-a-semantic-web/ In this blog post, the author presents the following situation analysis: The network commonly referred to as the World Wide Web (“Web”) is built upon the powerful duality delivered by a HTTP URI (“Hyperlink”). Hypermedia (Webby Content) is Document Content that includes hyperlinks, which may or may not include explicit controls for Hyperlink lookup (or dereference). Notations for creating RDF document content e.g., (RDF-Turtle or JSON-LD) don’t include explicit Hyperlink-lookup controls. This has led to a false dichotomy has arisen across the communities of so-called “Web Developers” (who prefer explicit Hyperlink-lookup controls) and don’t necessarily see the need for HTTP URI opacity. The author argues that "the notion of a Semantic Web of Linked Data and REST-ful interactions using APIs aren’t in anyway mutually exclusive". He presents an example (with screenshots) showing how a single instance of OpenLink Smart Data Bot (OSDB), combined with the use of several other tools, provides a REST-ful interaction point for engaging a variety of Actions extracted from a variety of APIs documented using Swagger and/or RDF documents.

The Semantic Web and Linked Data Concepts: A Basic Overview Assignment https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-semantic-web-and-linked-data-concepts-a-basic-overview-assignment/ Fri, 19 May 2017 07:03:11 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-semantic-web-and-linked-data-concepts-a-basic-overview-assignment/ This assignment covers material presented in the first module of the BIBFRAME pilot training project at the Library of Congress. It consists of links to a brief reading and two videos for users to watch before answering several short essay questions. The subject matter concerns how Europeana has adopted a Semantic Web model for its data and, conversely, the Linked Jazz Project's use of library metadata to enhance its services.

The Semantic Web and Linked Data Concepts: A Basic Overview https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-semantic-web-and-linked-data-concepts-a-basic-overview/ Fri, 19 May 2017 07:03:11 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-semantic-web-and-linked-data-concepts-a-basic-overview/ This PowerPoint presentation was used during the "Introduction to the Semantic Web and Linked Data" module of the pilot training project developed by the Library of Congress which tested the use of BIBFRAME for bibliographic description. The purpose of this presentation is to introduce the Semantic Web, Linked Data concepts, and some basic tools. Topics covered include the role of semantically linked data in creating useful web services and connecting datasets on the web. The limits of the current MARC based environment are contrasted with the promise of integrating data more fully with Semantic Web resources to enhance user services. The module's home page contains links to more materials.

Introduction to Semantic Web Technologies and Linked Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/introduction-to-semantic-web-technologies-and-linked-data/ Wed, 21 Oct 2015 20:15:07 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/introduction-to-semantic-web-technologies-linked-data/ These slides appear to have been used for a course in Database Management Systems at the University of Toronto, but contain material which the creator attributes to other authors. The first part covers the "Web of Documents vs. Web of Data". The second part covers the RDF framework. Later sections cover Linked Data Principles and Linked Open Data. Contains examples of Linked Data applications and mashups.

Introduction to Linked Data: Background Technologies and Standards, Motivating Application Scenario https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/introduction-to-linked-data-background-technologies-and-standards-motivating-application-scenario/ Tue, 15 Sep 2015 02:33:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/introduction-to-linked-data-background-technologies-and-standards-motivating-application-scenario/ This presentation introduces the main principles of Linked Data, including the underlying technologies and background standards. It provides basic knowledge for how data can be published over the Web, how it can be queried, plus possible use cases and benefits. The development of a music portal (based on the MusicBrainz dataset) which facilitates access to a wide range of information and multimedia resources relating to music is presented as an example. From Linked Data to Networked Knowledge https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/from-linked-data-to-networked-knowledge/ Tue, 15 Sep 2015 02:33:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/from-linked-data-to-networked-knowledge/ This lecture briefly covers the history of human communication up to the present day and then seeks to answer the question, "How best can we create a true Web of Data"? The speaker asks whether ontologies are really the best approach, then explains class-based vs. prototype-based programming languages. Also discussed the difficulties of combining open and private data.
