It explains how SKOS differs from OWL a more formal system of semantics. Along the way, basic Linked Data Principles are explained. Includes links to references and demos, which explain the benefits of using SKOS as well as areas that need to be developed further.

OntoCheck: Verifying Ontology Naming Conventions and Metadata Completeness in Protégé 4 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontocheck-verifying-ontology-naming-conventions-and-metadata-completeness-in-protege-4/ Sat, 22 Jul 2017 07:21:14 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontocheck-verifying-ontology-naming-conventions-and-metadata-completeness-in-protege-4/ This article describes OntoCheck, a plugin available for the Protégé Ontology editor. OntoCheck, allows for ontology tests to be carried out on OWL ontologies, aiding in consistency and compliance with ontology naming conventions and metadata completeness, as well as curation in case of found violations. The authors describe a first version of the software, illustrate its capabilities and use within running ontology development efforts and briefly outline improvements resulting from its application.

Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV): A Gateway to Reusable Semantic Vocabularies on the Web https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-open-vocabularies-lov-a-gateway-to-reusable-semantic-vocabularies-on-the-web/ Sat, 22 Jul 2017 07:21:14 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-open-vocabularies-lov-a-gateway-to-reusable-semantic-vocabularies-on-the-web/ One of the major barriers to the deployment of Linked Data is the difficulty that data publishers have in determining which vocabularies to use to describe the semantics of data. This systematic report describes Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV), a high-quality catalogue of reusable vocabularies for the description of data on the Web. The adoption of LOV by many applications and methods shows the importance of such a set of vocabularies and related features for ontology design and the publication of data on the Web.

Semantic Web Misconceptions https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/semantic-web-misconceptions/ Sat, 22 Jul 2017 07:21:14 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/semantic-web-misconceptions/ The Semantic Web has been talked about for more than a decade. Over those years, several mistaken or misleading ideas about the Semantic Web have repeatedly popped up. This lessons looks at some of the most pervasive of these misconceptions and discusses both the confusion and the reality of the situation.

<sameAs>: interlinking the Web of Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/interlinking-the-web-of-data/ Fri, 21 Jul 2017 07:20:23 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/interlinking-the-web-of-data/ The Web of Data has many equivalent URIs. This service helps you to find co-references between different data sets. The main store includes referents from DBpedia, VIAF, the British Library, and other authoritative sources. There are also links to many smaller sameAs stores that are being populated and used by projects and people. The latter are entirely independent from the main sameAs store, although some of the data may also be reflected in the main sameAs store..

Library Linked Data Incubator Group: Datasets, Value Vocabularies, and Metadata Element Sets https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/library-linked-data-incubator-group-datasets-value-vocabularies-and-metadata-element-sets/ Tue, 23 May 2017 07:03:37 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/library-linked-data-incubator-group-datasets-value-vocabularies-and-metadata-element-sets/ This report on datasets, value vocabularies and metadata elements sets is a complement to the main report of the Library Linked Data Incubator Group. It contains a set of useful resources for creating or consuming Linked Data in the library domain. In particular, it lists numerous resources for discovering existing Liked Data datasets and RDF vocabularies for reuse. It is intended both for novices seeking an overview of Linked Data focusing on the library domain, and for experts in search of a quick look-up or refresher.

Linked Data for Libraries, Archives and Museums: How to clean, link and publish your metadata https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-for-libraries-archives-and-museums-how-to-clean-link-and-publish-your-metadata/ Mon, 22 May 2017 07:03:30 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-for-libraries-archives-and-museums-how-to-clean-link-and-publish-your-metadata/ This handbook teaches how to unlock the value of existing metadata through cleaning, reconciliation, enrichment and linking, as well as how to streamline the process of new metadata creation. It introduces the key concepts related to metadata standards and Linked Data and how they can be practically applied to existing metadata. Chapters are dedicated to modeling, cleaning, reconciling, enriching, and publishing one's data.

The Academy Unbound Linked Data as Revolution https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-academy-unbound-linked-data-as-revolution/ Mon, 22 May 2017 07:03:30 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-academy-unbound-linked-data-as-revolution/ Much has been said about Linked Data, its ties to the Semantic Web, and its application for libraries, but what is it exactly and how does it work? This paper aims to answer these questions by defining Linked Data, discussing problems with libraries’ focus on bibliographic records, and exploring the potential of Linked Data as a solution in a rapidly evolving global discovery environment. A new discovery approach developed by the Bibliothèque nationale de France is presented as a service that takes advantage of the potential of linked data.

Europeana: Moving to Linked Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/europeana-moving-to-linked-data/ Mon, 22 May 2017 07:03:30 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/europeana-moving-to-linked-data/ This article describes the pilot project undertaken by Europeana. Its goal was to replace data societies within the cultural heritage domain with "a distributed information continuum enabled by linked open data". Challenges that had to be overcome included: metadata schema interoperability; URI dereferencability; issues of trust and provenance. The project produced the Europeana Data model (EDM) and a "Technical Architecture" for data providers to use when publishing their metadata.

The quiz consists of five multiple choice questions with the answers explained in popups after the user has made their selection. Questions address possible misconceptions regarding Linked Data principles and Linked Open Data (LOD), as well as the role of the RDF data model, triple statements, and vocabularies within the Semantic Web.
