OntoCheck: Verifying Ontology Naming Conventions and Metadata Completeness in Protégé 4

This article describes OntoCheck, a plugin available for the Protégé Ontology editor. OntoCheck, allows for ontology tests to be carried out on OWL ontologies, aiding in consistency and compliance with ontology naming conventions and metadata completeness, as well as curation in case of found violations. The authors describe a first version of the software, illustrate its capabilities and use within running ontology development efforts and briefly outline improvements resulting from its application.

Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV): A Gateway to Reusable Semantic Vocabularies on the Web

One of the major barriers to the deployment of Linked Data is the difficulty that data publishers have in determining which vocabularies to use to describe the semantics of data. This systematic report describes Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV), a high-quality catalogue of reusable vocabularies for the description of data on the Web. The adoption of LOV by many applications and methods shows the importance of such a set of vocabularies and related features for ontology design and the publication of data on the Web.

The Web of Data has many equivalent URIs. This service helps you to find co-references between different data sets. The main store includes referents from DBpedia, VIAF, the British Library, and other authoritative sources. There are also links to many smaller sameAs stores that are being populated and used by projects and people. The latter are entirely independent from the main sameAs store, although some of the data may also be reflected in the main sameAs store..

The Academy Unbound Linked Data as Revolution

This paper aims to answer these questions by defining Linked Data, discussing problems with libraries’ focus on bibliographic records, and exploring the potential of Linked Data as a solution in a rapidly evolving global discovery environment. A new discovery approach developed by the Bibliothèque nationale de France is presented as a service that takes advantage of the potential of linked data.

Europeana: Moving to Linked Data

This article describes the pilot project undertaken by Europeana. Its goal was to replace data societies within the cultural heritage domain with "a distributed information continuum enabled by linked open data". Challenges that had to be overcome included: metadata schema interoperability; URI dereferencability; issues of trust and provenance. The project produced the Europeana Data model (EDM) and a "Technical Architecture" for data providers to use when publishing their metadata.
