This systematic report describes Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV), a high-quality catalogue of reusable vocabularies for the description of data on the Web. The adoption of LOV by many applications and methods shows the importance of such a set of vocabularies and related features for ontology design and the publication of data on the Web.

Library Linked Data Incubator Group: Datasets, Value Vocabularies, and Metadata Element Sets https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/library-linked-data-incubator-group-datasets-value-vocabularies-and-metadata-element-sets/ Tue, 23 May 2017 07:03:37 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/library-linked-data-incubator-group-datasets-value-vocabularies-and-metadata-element-sets/ This report on datasets, value vocabularies and metadata elements sets is a complement to the main report of the Library Linked Data Incubator Group. It contains a set of useful resources for creating or consuming Linked Data in the library domain. In particular, it lists numerous resources for discovering existing Liked Data datasets and RDF vocabularies for reuse. It is intended both for novices seeking an overview of Linked Data focusing on the library domain, and for experts in search of a quick look-up or refresher.

Ordnance Survey Linked Data: A Simple Spatial Query https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ordnance-survey-linked-data-a-simple-spatial-query/ Wed, 11 Jan 2017 06:45:37 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ordnance-survey-linked-data-a-simple-spatial-query/ In this blog post, the author discusses the relative lack of spatial indexes for data in RDF triple stores, compared to data stored in GIS systems and a number of spatially enabled relational databases. He shares an example using the Ordnance Survey Data's API to obtain a location's URI, which is then used to construct a series of SPARQL queries based on several spatial relationships related to that location.

How to (Properly) Publish a Vocabulary or Ontology On the Web, Part 6 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/how-to-properly-publish-a-vocabulary-or-ontology-on-the-web-part-6/ Wed, 21 Dec 2016 06:43:12 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/how-to-properly-publish-a-vocabulary-or-ontology-on-the-web-part-6/ This resource contains a set of guidelines on how to reuse other vocabularies (i.e., how one's vocabulary should link to other vocabularies). Reuse is not only related to publication, but also to the design of a vocabulary. Discusses the relative benefits of either importing another vocabulary into one's own vocabulary, or extending only those properties and classes that one is going to reuse, without adding all of the terms of the other vocabulary. Includes a short list of resources for finding RDF vocabularies for reuse.

DBPedia SPARQL Endpoint Exercises https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/dbpedia-sparql-endpoint-exercises/ Thu, 24 Nov 2016 05:51:17 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/dbpedia-sparql-endpoint-exercises/ This slide tutorial teaches the user how to form SPARQL queries to answer various questions of interest and retrieve results from DBpedia's SPARQL endpoint. In each example, a prompt is given and then followed by the completed query and results table. Also discussed is how to find an appropriate vocabulary using the Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV).

Adoption of Linked Data Best Practices in Different Topical Domains https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/adoption-of-linked-data-best-practices-in-different-topical-domains/ Tue, 10 Nov 2015 05:13:00 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/adoption-of-linked-data-best-practices-in-different-topical-domains/ The central idea of Linked Data is that data publishers support applications in discovering and integrating data by complying to a set of best practices in the areas of linking, vocabulary usage, and metadata provision. This paper revisits and updates the findings of the 2011 State of the LOD Cloud report based on a crawl of the Web of Linked Data conducted in April 2014.

Vocabulary Mapping Framework https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/vocabulary-mapping-framework/ Sat, 10 Oct 2015 12:05:44 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/vocabulary-mapping-framework/ This is the website of the Vocabulary Mapping Framework (VMF). It provides support for semantic interoperability across communities by providing extensive and authoritative mapping of vocabularies from content metadata standards and proprietary schemes. VMF is not intended as a replacement for any existing standards, but as an aid to interoperability, whether automatic or human-mediated.

The Vocabulary Mapping Framework (VMF): An Introduction v1.0 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-vocabulary-mapping-framework-vmf-an-introduction-v1-0/ Sat, 10 Oct 2015 12:05:44 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-vocabulary-mapping-framework-vmf-an-introduction-v1-0/ This document provides an introduction to the structure and development of the Vocabulary Mapping Framework (VMF) up to the end of the first stage of this work in November 2009. The document is in two parts: an overview and a technical description. Near the end, candidate mappings between Onix Code List 17 and the Marc 21 “Relationship” vocabularies are shown. The SPARQL queries used to derive the mappings are shown following.

Cookbook for Translating Relational Data Models to RDF Schemas https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/cookbook-for-translating-relational-data-models-to-rdf-schemas/ Tue, 15 Sep 2015 02:33:10 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/cookbook-for-translating-relational-data-models-to-rdf-schemas/ This slide presentation provides guidance for a person tasked with translating a Domain Model into an RDF schema. Modelling initiatives usually focus on a Domain Model that shows the classes, properties and relationships as this greatly aids human understanding of the information space. To achieve interoperability between two systems that need to seamlessly exchange data, a conceptual Domain Model needs to be implemented in a machine-readable and –understandable format, such as XML or RDF.
