Mapping RDF vocabularies – Linked Data for Professional Education https://ld4pe.dublincore.org Learning resources tagged by competency Thu, 19 Nov 2020 14:45:03 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.16 <sameAs>: interlinking the Web of Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/interlinking-the-web-of-data/ Fri, 21 Jul 2017 07:20:23 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/interlinking-the-web-of-data/ The Web of Data has many equivalent URIs. This service helps you to find co-references between different data sets. The main store includes referents from DBpedia, VIAF, the British Library, and other authoritative sources. There are also links to many smaller sameAs stores that are being populated and used by projects and people. The latter are entirely independent from the main sameAs store, although some of the data may also be reflected in the main sameAs store..

RDFS for Hierarchy and Subsumption https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdfs-for-hierarchy-and-subsumption/ Sun, 02 Apr 2017 06:55:49 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdfs-for-hierarchy-and-subsumption/ This PowerPoint presentation explains the role which concepts from thesauri and taxonomies play in Linked Data (especially as they relate to SKOS). It briefly discusses ontologies in general before moving on to RDF Schema. Examples are given of how to defines classes of resources and the relations that connect them using RDFS. Focuses on defining hierarchical relations in support of inference (i.e., formally stating that membership in a narrower class automatically implies membership in a broader class).

OWL "Same As" https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/owl-same-as/ Sun, 02 Apr 2017 06:55:49 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/owl-same-as/ This PowerPoint presentation explains the role which concepts from thesauri and taxonomies play in Linked Data. It briefly discusses ontologies in general before moving on to OWL (Web Ontology Language). Discusses the advantages and drawbacks of mixing vocabularies (e.g., OWL, RDFS, SKOS) and trade-offs between simplicity and expressivity. Focuses on the importance of not trying to force relationship types when they are not appropriate (e.g., "broader than" or "narrower than" when no hierarchy exists; "same as" when two objects are not exact matches).

How to (Properly) Publish a Vocabulary or Ontology On the Web, Part 6 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/how-to-properly-publish-a-vocabulary-or-ontology-on-the-web-part-6/ Wed, 21 Dec 2016 06:43:12 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/how-to-properly-publish-a-vocabulary-or-ontology-on-the-web-part-6/ This resource contains a set of guidelines on how to reuse other vocabularies (i.e., how one's vocabulary should link to other vocabularies). Reuse is not only related to publication, but also to the design of a vocabulary. Discusses the relative benefits of either importing another vocabulary into one's own vocabulary, or extending only those properties and classes that one is going to reuse, without adding all of the terms of the other vocabulary. Includes a short list of resources for finding RDF vocabularies for reuse.

RDFProv: A Relational RDF Store for Querying and Managing Scientific Workflow Provenance https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdfprov-a-relational-rdf-store-for-querying-and-managing-scientific-workflow-provenance/ Wed, 23 Nov 2016 05:50:23 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdfprov-a-relational-rdf-store-for-querying-and-managing-scientific-workflow-provenance/ Provenance metadata has become increasingly important to support scientific discovery, reproducibility, result interpretation, and problem diagnosis in scientific workflow environments. The provenance management problem concerns the efficiency and effectiveness of the modeling, recording, representation, integration, storage, and querying of provenance metadata. The authors present an approach to provenance management which they claim "seamlessly integrates the interoperability, extensibility, and inference advantages of Semantic Web technologies with the storage and querying power of an RDBMS to meet the emerging requirements of scientific workflow provenance management". In this paper, they elaborate on the design of a relational RDF store, called RDFProv, which is optimized for scientific workflow provenance querying and management.

Tutorial on Metadata Provenance https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/tutorial-on-metadata-provenance/ Wed, 23 Nov 2016 05:50:23 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/tutorial-on-metadata-provenance/ This two-part slide presentation was used at the Semantic Web in Libraries (SWIB) Conference. "Part 1: Linked Data Provenance" answers the questions, "How can we identify RDF data, statements within RDF data, Linked Data, … in order to provide provenance?". "Part 2: The PROV Ontology" addresses, "How can we represent the provenance of resources?".

A Complete Example of How to Link Data, Part 3 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/a-complete-example-of-how-to-link-data-part-3-2/ Wed, 16 Nov 2016 05:44:22 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/a-complete-example-of-how-to-link-data-part-3-2/ This video picks up where the previous two left off, covering the steps of setting up a Fuseki server to store data, interlinking that data with Silk, and then using Pubby to publish the data on the Web. Demonstrates how to connect entities by their URIs (rather than their labels) using sameAs. The tutorial ends by showing how SPARQL can be used to successfully query and filter the data which has just been published.

Semantic Web Languages and Standards https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/semantic-web-languages-and-standards/ Sat, 16 Jan 2016 13:43:29 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/semantic-web-languages-and-standards/ This lecture covers a lot of ground- from very basic to quite advanced. It begins by attempting to define the Semantic Web and explain its basic principles, which leads to a discussion of Linked Data and the principles which underpin it. The RDF data model is briefly described before moving on to how vocabularies are designed and reasoned over using RDF Schema and OWL.

Linked Data Patterns https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-patterns/ Sat, 16 Jan 2016 13:43:28 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-patterns/ This resource is a pattern catalogue for modelling, publishing, and consuming Linked Data which adopts a tried and tested means of communicating knowledge and experience in software development: the design pattern. The intent is to create a ready reference that will be useful for both the beginner and the experienced practitioner alike. It is also intended to grow and mature in line with the practitioner community. NOTE: This is a book-length resource and covers a wide range of different areas from the design of Web-scale identifiers to application development patterns.

Methodological Guidelines for Publishing Government Linked Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/methodological-guidelines-for-publishing-government-linked-data/ Wed, 21 Oct 2015 20:15:07 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/methodological-guidelines-for-publishing-government-linked-data/ Publishing Linked Data is a process that involves many steps, design decisions and technologies. Some initial guidelines have been provided by Linked Data publishers, but these are still far from covering all the steps that are necessary. This chapter, from the book "Linking Government Data" (Springer, 2011), proposes a set of methodological guidelines for the activities involved in the publication process. These guidelines are the result of the authors' experience in the production of Linked Data in several Governmental contexts and are validated by the GeoLinkedData and AEMETLinkedData use cases.
