Recognizes that owl:sameAs, while popular as a mapping property, has strong formal semantics that can entail unintended inferences. – Linked Data for Professional Education https://ld4pe.dublincore.org Learning resources tagged by competency Thu, 19 Nov 2020 14:45:03 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.16 <sameAs>: interlinking the Web of Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/interlinking-the-web-of-data/ Fri, 21 Jul 2017 07:20:23 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/interlinking-the-web-of-data/ The Web of Data has many equivalent URIs. This service helps you to find co-references between different data sets. The main store includes referents from DBpedia, VIAF, the British Library, and other authoritative sources. There are also links to many smaller sameAs stores that are being populated and used by projects and people. The latter are entirely independent from the main sameAs store, although some of the data may also be reflected in the main sameAs store..

OWL "Same As" https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/owl-same-as/ Sun, 02 Apr 2017 06:55:49 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/owl-same-as/ This PowerPoint presentation explains the role which concepts from thesauri and taxonomies play in Linked Data. It briefly discusses ontologies in general before moving on to OWL (Web Ontology Language). Discusses the advantages and drawbacks of mixing vocabularies (e.g., OWL, RDFS, SKOS) and trade-offs between simplicity and expressivity. Focuses on the importance of not trying to force relationship types when they are not appropriate (e.g., "broader than" or "narrower than" when no hierarchy exists; "same as" when two objects are not exact matches).

A Complete Example of How to Link Data, Part 3 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/a-complete-example-of-how-to-link-data-part-3-2/ Wed, 16 Nov 2016 05:44:22 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/a-complete-example-of-how-to-link-data-part-3-2/ This video picks up where the previous two left off, covering the steps of setting up a Fuseki server to store data, interlinking that data with Silk, and then using Pubby to publish the data on the Web. Demonstrates how to connect entities by their URIs (rather than their labels) using sameAs. The tutorial ends by showing how SPARQL can be used to successfully query and filter the data which has just been published.

Linked Data Patterns https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-patterns/ Sat, 16 Jan 2016 13:43:28 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-data-patterns/ This resource is a pattern catalogue for modelling, publishing, and consuming Linked Data which adopts a tried and tested means of communicating knowledge and experience in software development: the design pattern. The intent is to create a ready reference that will be useful for both the beginner and the experienced practitioner alike. It is also intended to grow and mature in line with the practitioner community. NOTE: This is a book-length resource and covers a wide range of different areas from the design of Web-scale identifiers to application development patterns.

Publishing Relational Databases as Linked Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/publishing-relational-databases-as-linked-data/ Wed, 21 Oct 2015 20:15:07 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/publishing-relational-databases-as-linked-data/ These slides appear to have been used for a course in Database Management Systems at the University of Toronto, but contain material which the creator attributes to other authors. Part 1 outlines a six-step process for "Publishing Linked Data on the Web". Part 2, "How to Publish Relational Databases as Linked Data", covers the following subjects: Mapping relational databases to RDF; following Linked Data Principles and guidelines; mapping and publication tools; the D2R Server.

Methodological Guidelines for Publishing Government Linked Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/methodological-guidelines-for-publishing-government-linked-data/ Wed, 21 Oct 2015 20:15:07 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/methodological-guidelines-for-publishing-government-linked-data/ Publishing Linked Data is a process that involves many steps, design decisions and technologies. Some initial guidelines have been provided by Linked Data publishers, but these are still far from covering all the steps that are necessary. This chapter, from the book "Linking Government Data" (Springer, 2011), proposes a set of methodological guidelines for the activities involved in the publication process. These guidelines are the result of the authors' experience in the production of Linked Data in several Governmental contexts and are validated by the GeoLinkedData and AEMETLinkedData use cases.

RDF, SPARQL and Semantic Repositories https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdf-sparql-and-semantic-repositories/ Fri, 09 Oct 2015 12:05:16 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdf-sparql-and-semantic-repositories/ This massive slide presentation covers a LOT of ground, including. It begins with the benefits of using RDF, RDFS/OWL entailment rules and how they can be used for inferencing, and a thorough discussion of the OWL language and its flavors. The next section covers the SPARQL query language , discussing its basic features and how it compares to SQL. Moving on, the next few sections cover semantic repositories as well as bench-marking and scalability. Then, the use of MapReduce for massively distributed RDF materialization is discussed, followed by RDBMS-to-RDF mapping approaches and tools. Finally, various RDF tools (including ontology editors, RDF-izers, and RDF APIs) are presented.

Discovering Missing Semantic Relations Between Entities in Wikipedia https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/discovering-missing-semantic-relations-between-entities-in-wikipedia/ Tue, 15 Sep 2015 02:33:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/discovering-missing-semantic-relations-between-entities-in-wikipedia/ Wikipedia’s infoboxes contain rich structured information of various entities, which have been exploited by the DBpedia project to generate large-scale Linked Data datasets. Among all the infobox attributes, those attributes which have hyperlinked values identifying semantic relations between entities are the most important for creating links between DBpedia’s instances. However, quite a few of the hyperlinks in infoboxes have not been annotated by editors, which causes lots of missing relations between entities in Wikipedia. The speaker proposes an approach for automatically discovering the missing entity links in Wikipedia’s infoboxes, so that the missing semantic relations between entities can be established.

Providing Linked Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/providing-linked-data-2/ Tue, 15 Sep 2015 02:33:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/providing-linked-data-2/ This video presentation covers the whole spectrum of Linked Data production and exposure. It begins with a grounding in Linked Data principles and best practices, with special emphasis on the VoID vocabulary. It then covers R2RML (for operating on relational databases), Open Refine (for operating on spreadsheets), and GATECloud (for operating on natural language). Finally, the presentation describes means to increase inter-linkage between datasets, focusing on tools like Silk. NOTE: This a three-part lecture, with all three videos hosted at the same URL. These videos represent material from several lessons that comprised a larger "module" of the EUCLID Project. As such, they cover a wider range of topics than most resources.

Google Refine is used for the transformation process. The goal is to show how to build a basic RDF structure, link particular tables, and explain the reconciliation process. The data is linked to the DBpedia and Europeana SPARQL endpoints.
