Identifies resource attributes and relationships between domain entities as candidates for RDF properties. – Linked Data for Professional Education https://ld4pe.dublincore.org Learning resources tagged by competency Thu, 19 Nov 2020 14:45:03 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.16 Design an OWL Ontology Project https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/design-an-owl-ontology-project/ Sat, 21 Jan 2017 06:46:40 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/design-an-owl-ontology-project/ This document outlines a project originally from the course "Semantic Web Topics" at LeHigh University. Students are asked to work in teams to design an OWL 2 DL ontology (or set of ontologies) for an application domain of their choice – ideally, this domain should be one they know about. Since students are also expected to create a set of instances that demonstrate the use of the ontology, they should also choose a domain that has data they can access. Ontologies must be valid OWL or OWL 2 DL ontologies and should use the rich modeling constructs of OWL as much as possible. A DL reasoner should be used to ensure that classes are satisfiable and that the ontology does not lead to unintended inferences.

The Nuts and Bolts of Thesaurus Development and Maintenance https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-nuts-and-bolts-of-thesaurus-development-and-maintenance/ Wed, 21 Dec 2016 06:43:13 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/the-nuts-and-bolts-of-thesaurus-development-and-maintenance/ In this video, the narrator explains how to develop a taxonomy from scratch and how to modify an existing vocabulary. He demonstrates how to structure a controlled vocabulary based on a hierarchical sorting of terms while detailing the differences between each taxonomic classification. The talk covers both top-down and bottom-up approaches to thesaurus construction. Best practices in thesaurus management are discussed in order to ensure fully functional and descriptive vocabularies.

Combining RDF and XML Schemas to Enhance Interoperability Between Metadata Application Profiles https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/combining-rdf-and-xml-schemas-to-enhance-interoperability-between-metadata-application-profiles/ Sun, 04 Oct 2015 05:32:27 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/combining-rdf-and-xml-schemas-to-enhance-interoperability-between-metadata-application-profiles/ The term Application Profile (AP) has recently become highly topical, with initiatives demanding APs which combine elements from a number of different existing standardized metadata schemas whilst maintaining interoperability and satisfying their own specific requirements through refinements, extensions and additions. This paper describes a hybrid collaborative approach which combines the semantic knowledge of RDF Schemas with the explicit structural, cardinality and data-typing constraints provided by XML Schemas in a complementary manner.

It answers the question, "What is an ontology and why do we need one?" It includes a step-by-step guide to ontology development and covers advanced issues in knowledge modeling. Uses the open-source tool Protege, with several plugins and applications.

To meet this goal, the process and methodology for developing semantic agreements developed by the ISA Programme of the European Commission is discussed. Prompts for group exercises are included.
