Knows that the word “ontology” is ambiguous, referring to any RDF vocabulary, but more typically a set of OWL classes and properties designed to support inferencing in a specific domain. – Linked Data for Professional Education https://ld4pe.dublincore.org Learning resources tagged by competency Thu, 19 Nov 2020 14:45:03 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=4.9.16 OntoCheck: Verifying Ontology Naming Conventions and Metadata Completeness in Protégé 4 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontocheck-verifying-ontology-naming-conventions-and-metadata-completeness-in-protege-4/ Sat, 22 Jul 2017 07:21:14 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontocheck-verifying-ontology-naming-conventions-and-metadata-completeness-in-protege-4/ This article describes OntoCheck, a plugin available for the Protégé Ontology editor. OntoCheck, allows for ontology tests to be carried out on OWL ontologies, aiding in consistency and compliance with ontology naming conventions and metadata completeness, as well as curation in case of found violations. The authors describe a first version of the software, illustrate its capabilities and use within running ontology development efforts and briefly outline improvements resulting from its application.

Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV): A Gateway to Reusable Semantic Vocabularies on the Web https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-open-vocabularies-lov-a-gateway-to-reusable-semantic-vocabularies-on-the-web/ Sat, 22 Jul 2017 07:21:14 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/linked-open-vocabularies-lov-a-gateway-to-reusable-semantic-vocabularies-on-the-web/ One of the major barriers to the deployment of Linked Data is the difficulty that data publishers have in determining which vocabularies to use to describe the semantics of data. This systematic report describes Linked Open Vocabularies (LOV), a high-quality catalogue of reusable vocabularies for the description of data on the Web. The adoption of LOV by many applications and methods shows the importance of such a set of vocabularies and related features for ontology design and the publication of data on the Web.

Semantic Web Misconceptions https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/semantic-web-misconceptions/ Sat, 22 Jul 2017 07:21:14 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/semantic-web-misconceptions/ The Semantic Web has been talked about for more than a decade. Over those years, several mistaken or misleading ideas about the Semantic Web have repeatedly popped up. This lessons looks at some of the most pervasive of these misconceptions and discusses both the confusion and the reality of the situation.

OWL 2 Web Ontology Language Primer (Second Edition) https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/owl-2-web-ontology-language-primer-second-edition/ Thu, 18 May 2017 07:03:04 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/owl-2-web-ontology-language-primer-second-edition/ This primer provides an approachable introduction to OWL 2, including orientation for those coming from other disciplines, a running example showing how the language can be used to represent first simple information and then more complex information, how it manages ontologies, and finally the distinctions between its various "flavors".

OWL "Same As" https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/owl-same-as/ Sun, 02 Apr 2017 06:55:49 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/owl-same-as/ This PowerPoint presentation explains the role which concepts from thesauri and taxonomies play in Linked Data. It briefly discusses ontologies in general before moving on to OWL (Web Ontology Language). Discusses the advantages and drawbacks of mixing vocabularies (e.g., OWL, RDFS, SKOS) and trade-offs between simplicity and expressivity. Focuses on the importance of not trying to force relationship types when they are not appropriate (e.g., "broader than" or "narrower than" when no hierarchy exists; "same as" when two objects are not exact matches).

What Is Ontology? Introduction to the Word and the Concept https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/what-is-ontology-introduction-to-the-word-and-the-concept/ Thu, 29 Dec 2016 06:44:04 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/what-is-ontology-introduction-to-the-word-and-the-concept/ This video explains the many different meanings of the word "ontology". It begins by discussing the terms origins and use in philosophy, then moves on to discussing how the term is also used in computer and information science to describe the process of modelling domain knowledge.

Open Provenance Model Vocabulary Specification https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/open-provenance-model-vocabulary-specification/ Wed, 23 Nov 2016 05:50:22 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/open-provenance-model-vocabulary-specification/ The Open Provenance Model Vocabulary (OPMV), is a lightweight provenance vocabulary aiming to provide terms to enable practitioners of data publishing to publish their data responsibly. OPMV can be used together with other provenance-related RDF/OWL vocabularies and/or ontologies, such as Dublin Core, FOAF, the Changeset Vocabulary, and the Provenance Vocabulary. The OPMV is defined as an OWL-DL ontology and it is partitioned into a core ontology and supplementary modules. This documents specifies the classes and properties introduced by the OPMV core ontology.

Ontologies and Data Models- Are They the Same? https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontologies-and-data-models-are-they-the-same-2/ Sun, 30 Oct 2016 05:39:55 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontologies-and-data-models-are-they-the-same-2/ This blog post from "Voyages of the Semantic Enterprise" discusses issues related to the title question, including a brief history of data modelling and how the RDF Data Model and the way it differs from the traditional relational model, mainly by allowing for much greater conceptual modelling.

Creating and Using Ontologies https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/creating-and-using-ontologies/ Sat, 16 Jan 2016 13:43:29 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/creating-and-using-ontologies/ Discussion of what ontologies are (and are not) and how to build them in two primary stages: 1) Requirements analysis and 2) Conceptualization. Each primary stage is broken down into sub- stages in which detailed concerns (e.g., domain and range, classes and properties, use of existing vocabularies) is considered. Good amount of discussion on how ontology relates to Linked Data with lots of examples.

Fairly dismissive of the Semantic Web as a pipe dream- but the description of how ontologies work in practice (in the context of querying a database) may be quite useful to those who have only been lectured on the topic of ontologies in an abstract, theoretical manner.
