Ontologies and the Semantic Web https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontologies-and-the-semantic-web-2/ Fri, 30 Dec 2016 06:44:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/ontologies-and-the-semantic-web-2/ A video lecture introducing RDF Schema and OWL, with visible slides throughout. The concepts behind ontologies are also discussed in a general, schema-agnostic manner. Places these technologies within the larger context of the Semantic Web.

Querying Linked Data https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/querying-linked-data-3/ Fri, 21 Oct 2016 05:39:20 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/module-2-querying-linked-data-2/ This module looks in great detail at SPARQL and introduces approaches for querying and updating semantic data. It covers the SPARQL algebra, the SPARQL 1.1 protocol, and provides examples for reasoning over Linked Data. The module uses examples from the music domain, which can be directly tried out and ran over the MusicBrainz dataset. This includes gaining familiarity with the RDFS and OWL languages, which allow developers to formulate generic and conceptual knowledge that can be exploited by automatic reasoning services in order to enhance the power of querying.

Multi-Agent and Semantic Web Systems: Description Logics and OWL https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/multi-agent-and-semantic-web-systems-description-logics-and-owl/ Fri, 13 Nov 2015 06:00:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/multi-agent-and-semantic-web-systems-description-logics-and-owl/ This slide presentation of lecture material was used as part of a course given at The University of Edinburgh School of Informatics. This lecture discusses Description Logic and terminology (such as ABox and TBox) and concepts (such as existential and universal restriction). Discusses OWL and how it is layered onto RDF and RDF Schema, with an RDF/XML syntax, to support inferencing. Object Properties, datatypes, restrictions, axioms, and cardinality in OWL are also discussed.

RDF, SPARQL and Semantic Repositories https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdf-sparql-and-semantic-repositories/ Fri, 09 Oct 2015 12:05:16 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdf-sparql-and-semantic-repositories/ This massive slide presentation covers a LOT of ground, including. It begins with the benefits of using RDF, RDFS/OWL entailment rules and how they can be used for inferencing, and a thorough discussion of the OWL language and its flavors. The next section covers the SPARQL query language , discussing its basic features and how it compares to SQL. Moving on, the next few sections cover semantic repositories as well as bench-marking and scalability. Then, the use of MapReduce for massively distributed RDF materialization is discussed, followed by RDBMS-to-RDF mapping approaches and tools. Finally, various RDF tools (including ontology editors, RDF-izers, and RDF APIs) are presented.

Learning from the Masters: Understanding Ontologies found on the Web (Part 2) https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/learning-from-the-masters-understanding-ontologies-found-on-the-web-part-2/ Tue, 15 Sep 2015 02:33:10 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/learning-from-the-masters-understanding-ontologies-found-on-the-web-part-2/ The purpose of this presentation was to help conference attendees gain sufficient experience of working with OWL and tools (e.g., the Swoop ontology editor/browser) to allow them to fruitfully explore new ontologies that they may encounter. Also addressed was gaining fluency in the use and abuse of OWL by examining features, limitations, and workarounds in real contexts, as well as gaining an understanding of the impact of future extensions of OWL. NOTE: This lecture given by Bijan Parsia is combined with Bernardo Cuenca Grau and will encompass Part 2, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7 of the complete lecture. Part 1, 3 and 4 of this lecture can be found at Bernardo Cuenca Grau's lecture.

It then outlines the main concepts and issues associated with the Web ontology languages, RDF, RDF Schema and OWL. By the end of this presentation viewers will have gained a basic understanding of the principles underlying OWL. Also quickly covers the basics of the RDF Data Model.

Answering Queries Over OWL Ontologies with SPARQL https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/answering-queries-over-owl-ontologies-with-sparql/ Tue, 15 Sep 2015 02:33:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/answering-queries-over-owl-ontologies-with-sparql/ This slide presentation discusses the various types of RDF Schema and OWL entailment regimes defined by SPARQL 1.1. It highlights where limitations and restrictions exist and suggests ways to make SPARQL-to-OWL queries more efficient. Options include class-property hierarchy exploitation, as well as exploiting domain and range restrictions. Very complex stuff- a version with audio would be most helpful.

RDF Database Systems: Triples Storage and SPARQL Query Processing https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdf-database-systems-triples-storage-and-sparql-query-processing/ Tue, 15 Sep 2015 02:33:09 +0000 https://ld4pe.dublincore.org/learning_resource/rdf-database-systems-1st-edition-triples-storage-and-sparql-query-processing/ Available in print or EBook, this resource professes to "distill everything you need to know to effectively use or design an RDF database". This book provides the necessary background information about the Semantic Web, the RDF graph data model, RDF Schema, SPARQL, and OWL within (and outside) the context of relational database management and NoSQL systems. The reader will learn about the prevailing RDF triples solutions for both relational and non-relational databases. Includes guidelines and solutions for storing RDF data, processing SPARQL queries, and evaluating which approaches and systems to use when developing Semantic Web applications – both commercial and open-source systems are described.
