This document is designed as being a "simple but comprehensive introductory publication for anybody trying to get into the Semantic Web: from beginners through to long time hackers". The early date of this document means that much has changed since its publication, but its simplicity makes it suitable for reading by the general public. Also, it shows what has been achieved, what is still in progress, and what has been abandoned during the long period between the conception of the Semantic Web and today.
