Freebase was an open database of the world's information, built by a global community and free for anyone to query, contribute to, and use as a source of data from which to build applications. Freebase drew from large open data sets (e.g., Wikipedia, MusicBrainz) and was curated by a passionate community of users . It contained structured information on millions of topics, including: people, places, music, film, food, science, and historical events. Freebase was focused on "consensus schema-building" as an alternative to designing complex ontologies.
