Defines the purpose of an XML Schema as defining the legal building blocks of an XML document. An XML Schema defines: elements and attributes that can appear in a document; which elements are child elements, their number, and their order; whether an element is empty or can include text; data types as well as default and fixed values for elements and attributes. An XML Schema is: extensible to future additions; is written in XML; supports data types, and supports namespaces.
